Dear Thomas-
Just a brief note to let you know as you suspected the Ethernet cable was indeed the issue for the controller malfunction and a test last evening with a short Ethernet cable confirmed you were absolutely correct in your assessment.

To that end I have ordered two 100 foot waterproof bright yellow Ethernet cables in hopes of making sure nobody accidentally steps on it in the future and that includes me.

As a side note at last Wednesday’s launch I did have two bright yellow, and one black tredded rubber ground wire protectors partly covering your Blue Ethernet cable but with 17 middle school children on the loose near the LCO table and unfortunately a green eight inch ground cover hiding the Ethernet wire perhaps the “accident” was inevitable.

Bottom line I want to thank you for your extraordinary customer relations and kind offer to go out of your way to help us meet our next launch deadline which is less than two weeks away. Tip of the hat indeed!

As noted previously our Section is absolutely delighted with your wired launch system and are very happy that the solution in this case was inexpensive and quickly implemented.

Again very much appreciate your good offices.
Hi Thomas,

Thank you for getting back to me! We recently purchased a fiver/SPORT Bundle (Complete Launch Setup) with Power Pack from Apogee Rockets and are very happy with it. We wanted to add another launch system and decided to come straight to the source. We were wanting to order additional Power Packs to keep on a standby as backups.

We were wanting to get a quote for:
(1) fiver/SPORT Bundle (Complete Launch Setup) with Power Pack
(2) Power Pack

Our finance team was also wanting to pay by PO, once we move to make a payment.
THIS controller is awesome. Just what we needed. After our first use I'll be ordering a couple more.

Best,

A rocket launch controller is a switched electrical system that delivers an electric current to ignite a rocket motor. We do not light rocket motors with burning fuses (like on a bottle rocket). We use an e-match or igniter, that generates a small burst of hot gas when energized. Inserted into a rocket motor, the igniter will light the fuel inside that motor when an electrical current is applied.

Rocket Launch Controllers use low voltage direct current (DC) power sources, typically 12vdc. It is desirable to locate the power source (battery) as close to the action as possible. Running launch current through a long wire reduces power due to the resistance of the wire. Our launch controllers use relays, which use a small signal from the Console to switch the large load between battery and rocket. The result is a reliable system for igniting rocket motors from a safe distance.

Circuit Breaker tripping? Here's what to Do!

Frequent tripping of the circuit breaker is due to shorted alligator Clips. When the launch leads fall away as the rocket flies, the alligator Clips may come to rest touching together. This can create a short circuit, which will trip the breaker. To reduce the risk of this happening:

#Tell your rocketeers to release the launch button as soon as the rocket flies,
#Always switch off the channel just launched, so that those leads are no longer energized.

Note: The 10 Amp thermal breaker will pass more than 10 Amps of current for a fraction of a second, then trip. Shorted launch leads are the most common cause of the breaker tripping. The breaker may be reset by pressing the white button with 10A printed on it.

All of the sudden the system is not switching properly. The system uses an ethernet cable as an extension. These cables are cheap and widely available, however they can break with rough use. I expect 2-5 years of regular use, unless someone is stepping on, driving over, or pulling tight the cable. If this happens to you, it is almost certainly a bad Ethernet cable. I recommend carrying a spare 50' Ethernet cable in case of breakage.

You can do a quick test any time, and with any Ethernet cable. You can test on a table, indoors if you wish. You can use a small segment (< 1/2") of one leg of a spent igniter to test firing the controller. Clip the alligator Clips to the igniter wire a little less than 1/2 inch apart. With proper launch operation, the wire will glow red for a heartbeat, then burn. Test continuity and firing exactly as you would when launching a rocket.

All systems are warenteed for 90 days for full replacement of any system or component in case of a defect. We service and repair our equipment, and keep a spare controller ready to ship in case a repair cannot be completed and returned before your next launch.

The 10 Amp thermal breaker will pass more than 10 Amps of current for a fraction of a second, then trip.

I expect 2-5 years of regular use, unless someone is stepping on or driving over or pulling tight the cable. If this happens to you, it is almost certainly a bad Ethernet cable. I recommend carrying a spare 50' Ethernet cable in case of breakage.

You can do a quick test any time and with any Ethernet cable. You can test on a table, indoors if you wish. You can use a small segment (< 1/2") of one leg of a spent igniter to test fireing the controller. Clip the alligator Clips to the igniter wire about 1/2" apart. Test continuity and fireing exactly as you would when launching a rocket.

##Tell your rocketeers to release the launch button as soon as the rocket flies,
##Always switch off the channel just launched, so that those leads are no longer energized.

The 10 Amp thermal breaker will pass more than 10 Amps of current for a fraction of a second, then trip. Shorted launch leads are the most common cause of the breaker tripping. The breaker may be reset by pressing the white button with 10A printed on it.

The fiver/SPORT Bundle is our best selling launch system (shown here). It is a complete launch rack and controller setup for five rockets. It may be carried to the field and set up by a single person, in a matter of minutes. Teardown is just as easy.

Everything is included from Power supply to alligator Clips. Everything you need to conduct a rocket launch. All controller components are stored in a compact reusable carton. Launch leads and extension cable wrap neatly onto the controller spool.

The SPORT Launch Rack includes five (5) 1/8" and two (2) 3/16" stainless steel launch rods, 3ft long. The launch rods and standoffs fit neatly inside the core of the rack for storage. Use any combination of rods. The rack is based on a sawhorse, which is the perfect elevation for young flyers. Launch leads are arranged in a guide channel across the front of the rack.

The launch angle of the rack is adjustable up to 30 degrees from vertical. Setup and tear-down takes minutes, and can easily be handled by one person.

The fiver/SPORT Bundle is our best selling product. Our customers range from rocketry clubs to schools and museums who support rocketry through STEM (STEAM) education programs like summer camp, 4H, and Civil Air Patrol. Need more launch positions? You can double your fun at a discount. Buy a second system with the By2 Adaptor and switch between two (2) racks from a single console for a total of ten (10) launch positions. This has the added benefit that flyers may be loading rockets on one rack while the other is live (launching rockets).

Safety

Impulse Launch Controllers are based on a dual-lockout design. There are ARM switches at both the Controller and the Console. When the system is ARMed it emits a loud audible alert to indicate that the system is live. Each controller includes an AUX Jack to connect ALLert, an LED strobe (optional) for visual indication that the system is live.

Our systems include the Power Pack, which is an automotive jump-starter battery with an EC-5 connector. There is no way to hook this up wrong, and there are no exposed terminals. Power Packs are good for 3-5 years of regular use, and are inexpensive to replace. The system includes a circuit breaker to protect against short circuit conditions that could pose a risk to the Power Pack.

The fiver-M

The Impulse fiver-M is a five (5) position launch controller ideal for Medium Power launches on your own launch rack, or individual pads. This controller is designed with larger launch leads attached via banana jacks to the controller. This makes it easy to customize the length of your launch leads to suit your setup. It also makes it easy to replace damaged leads.

ALLert is an intense flashing indicator that the launch controller is switched to ARM. It is especially useful on a launch range with multiple controllers in operation. Attached to the top of the controller with a velcro patch, it detaches and it stowed in the compartment with the Power Pack. ALLert is a durable and inexpensive option to enhance safety.
