I just completed our first prototype of the Low Power Relay board for the fiver controller. This is an effort to reduce the parts count, assembly complexity, and cost of the fiver controllers.
The prototype PCB worked as designed. However the traces were insufficient to carry the current required. The new relays are rated at 12 amps @ 12vdc. The original 40 amp relays are overkill for the fiver, which is designed for model and LPR (Class 1) rocketry.We will continue to use 40 amp relays for the HPR controllers.
The new PCB, shown here, features the widest traces I could fit, plus the traces are doubled; top and bottom. We will be testing the prototype with FLARE this summer. As soon as the new boards are delivered I will likely replace the prototype board with the production version shown.
